Thermopile Detector Options and Configuration Considerations:
Dexter Research Center specializes in working with customers to get
them exactly what they need in a thermopile. Below are brief descriptions
of the most common options and configuration considerations for
your review along with links to more detailed information. Don’t see what you need? Contact us! We’re
likely able to help you find the right solution to your problem.
In addition to the options below, we offer complete Customization,
Consulting, Design, and Calibration services.
- Filters and Windows define the spectral region of interest of the thermopile. Dexter
Research carries a number of windows and filters in stock from
wide-band-pass optical windows to selective narrow-band-pass
filters used for gas analysis. See Standard Windows & Filters
(PDF) for general spectral information and detector model/package availability. See Typical Spectral Characteristics (PDF) for typical spectral transmission curves for select filters.. - Dexter offers Silicon Micro-machined Diffractive Lenses specifically
designed for Long Wave Infrared (LWIR) measurements using thermopile detectors. Various focal lengths available. See Diffractive
Lenses (PDF) for detailed specifications. - Thermistors aid radiometric measurement by approximating the thermopile’s
cold junction temperature. Dexter offers optional
externally mounted thermistors for all models as well as internally
mounted thermistors on several of our models. Customers may supply
thermistors or choose from Dexter’s standard thermistors. See
Thermistor Options (PDF) for specific information. - Apertures inside the detector package allow the field
of view to be modified. Apertures are also useful in eliminating
cross talk in multi-channel detectors. See Aperture Options
(PDF) for detailed specifications. - Internal Heat Sinks decrease the thermal resistance between
the detector substrate and cold junctions to the detector header
and packaging. An Integral heat sink thermally
connects the detector cold junctions to the package allowing
the detector package to be externally heat sinked for
ambient temperature stability. Internal heat sinks are available
on most models except the models 6M, ST60, ST60 Dual, ST60 Quad, ST150, ST150 Dual, ST150 Quad, and array detectors. - Thermal Shock, the response time to equilibrium, is often an
important factor in thermopile applications. Dexter Research can moidfy thermal shock characteristics. - Package Hole Size: Package hole size can be customized to modify detector Field of View (FOV) on TO-5 packages. Hole size also defines the amount of energy coming into the package and subsequently falling on the detector active area. See the Internal Aperture Section of the Aperture Options (PDF) for more information and hole sizes available for TO-5 packages.
- Encapsulating Gas: The selection of encapsulating gas in a thermopile detector allows you to customize detector output sensitivity and time constant without affecting other parameters such as resistance or noise. See Effects of Encapsulating Gas on Thermopile Detectors (PDF) for detailed information and calculation tables.
